TEACHER’S DEVOTIONAL: Faith in Jesus Christ has made us citizens of a great kingdom – the kingdom of God. In this kingdom there are no limits to our potential. We are not bound by pride, lusts, doubts, worries, anxieties, and fears. We are not bound by dysfunctions, past failures, our own thinking & reasoning or the knowledge of man. The kingdom of God has no limits because God reigns in us and through us. He is in us and we are in Him. We have been born again into a kingdom where our Father is King and He overrides our flesh. We are citizens of the great kingdom of God through faith in Jesus Christ and our citizenship has given us the grace to walk in freedom and power. Praise the Lord that we are in this world but not of this world!

Read John 17:1-20 and continue to walk in truth.

THE OVERALL MODULE GOALS FOR THE CHILDREN ARE:

  • 1) Understand that the kingdom of God is when God is the ruler of their hearts.
  • 2) Understand that accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior makes them citizens of the kingdom of God.
  • 3) Understand that as Believers in Jesus Christ they can spread the kingdom of God.

NEEDED SUPPLIES:

MODULE MEMORY VERSE: John 3:3 – Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

LESSON #1: BORN AGAIN

PRECEPT #1: When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are born again into the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE READING: John 3:1-5 – There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

SCRIPTURE INTERPRETATION:

SCRIPTURE INTERPRETATION: In this passage an important ruler named Nicodemus saw all the signs and wonders that Jesus did. Nicodemus was very amazed by all the things He saw. He wanted to know how Jesus did these things. One night Nicodemus visited Jesus to ask Him. Jesus told Nicodemus “Honestly unless a person is born again they cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

Do you know what happened after Nicodemus heard Jesus’s answer? He got very confused. He said “What? I’ve already been born. I’m a big man. I’m a grown up. How can I be born again?” Nicodemus couldn’t understand what Jesus was saying and went back home confused.

We are born again when we believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him as our Lord and Savior; this is what “born again” means. Being born again can only come through faith in Jesus Christ. Luke 17:21b tells us “The kingdom of God is within you.” When we believe in Jesus and accept Him as our Savior the kingdom of God comes into us.

In verse 5 when Jesus answered Nicodemus a second time; Jesus said “Honestly a person has to be born again to enter into the kingdom of God.” then He added “born of water and the Spirit.”

When Jesus said “born of water” He was talking about being baptized. Baptism is when a person is immersed (dunked) into water to let everyone know that they have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Being baptized is very special and exciting.

When Jesus said “born of the Spirit” He was talking about how Holy Spirit comes into our hearts to indwell (live in) when we accept Him. Holy Spirit brings the kingdom of God into us.

ACTIVITY#1:

ACTIVITY#1: Hand out 2 pieces of construction paper (1 green & 1 red) to each student. Relay to the class that you’ll be making statements about being born again and the kingdom of God. Instruct the children to raise the green construction paper if the statement is true or raise the red construction paper if the statement is false.

NOTE: Develop the statements prior to class. The statements should be simple and come from this lesson as well as previous lessons (EXAMPLE: God the Holy Spirit lesson – “Holy Spirit comes to live in your heart when you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. True or false?”).

(OPTIONAL) ACTIVITY#2:

(OPTIONAL) ACTIVITY#2: Ask the children if any of them have been baptized. Select the students who have raised their hands in confirmation that they’ve been baptized and ask each of them to share their baptism experience with the class. Pay careful attention to what each child relays to make sure the below points are made in their statements:

  • 1) What made them accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior?
  • 2) How did their heart feel after they accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior?
  • 3) Why did they decided to get baptized?

NOTE: If the 3 points are not mentioned in the retelling of their baptism experience make sure to ask them so that it is shared with the other students.

WRAP UP:

WRAP UP: Restate precept #1 – When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are born again into the kingdom of God.

CONCLUSION (THE BIG PICTURE):

CONCLUSION (THE BIG PICTURE): Conclude by telling the children the Good News: We all make mistakes and do wrong and bad sometimes. When we do wrong and bad it is called sin. Sin is disobedience to God. We all sin. Sin separates us from God. God the Son (Jesus) came to save us from sin. Jesus Christ is our Savior.

The Bible says “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). This means that if you A) admit that you are a sinner because you have done wrong and bad; B) believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He came to earth, died on the cross, and came back to life to take away all of your sins; C) confess that Jesus is Lord and ask Him to come into your life; Jesus will come just like you ask!

Jesus Christ (God the Son) will come into your life and cover you with His love! Jesus will take away all your sins and you will be forgiven! He will love you and never stop loving you! He will never leave you! Jesus will send God the Holy Spirit to live in your heart. Holy Spirit will help you and fight for you! Holy Spirit will show you how to obey God. Holy Spirit will give you power to overcome (defeat) sin. Holy Spirit will help you spread God’s love to others! You will be in a relationship with God and you will never be separated from God again!

LESSON #2: FAITH COMES BY HEARING

PRECEPT #2: Jesus taught and showed us the kingdom of God.

BIBLE VERSE READING: Luke 4:43 – …He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”

BIBLE VERSE INTERPRETATION:

BIBLE VERSE INTERPRETATION: Jesus came to earth so that each of us could have a personal relationship with God through Him. When Jesus was on earth He went to different cities and towns to preach and teach people about the kingdom of God.

Romans 10:17 says “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” For us to have a relationship with God we have to first believe (have faith) in Jesus and accept Him as our Savior. We have to hear the word of God to learn about God and His kingdom; this is why Jesus said “I must preach the kingdom of God”. Jesus prophesied (revealed, told) people about God and His kingdom. Jesus wants all of us to hear the word of God so we can believe in Him.

Everywhere Jesus went He also demonstrated (showed) the kingdom of God to people with signs and wonders. People who were blind (couldn’t see) would be able to see, people who were deaf (couldn’t hear) would be able to hear, people who were mute (couldn’t speak) would be able to talk, and people who were lame (couldn’t walk) would be able to walk. People who were sick would become healed (cured of their diseases). Jesus even raised the dead like a little girl and His friend Lazarus. Jesus healed the minds and hearts of people. Jesus always showed love and grace to people everywhere He went. When people saw the things Jesus did and heard the things He said they would believe in Him. They would believe that Jesus was the Son of God, accept Him as their Savior, and become born again.

Jesus wants everyone to do good/ right and not bad/ wrong. Jesus wants all of us love and obey God. Remember to love God is to obey God; to obey God is to love God.

ACTIVITY #1:

ACTIVITY #1: Roll the scroll paper out on the floor or a very long table. Next instruct the children to collectively draw scenes of how Jesus preached, taught, and showed us the kingdom of God.

WRAP UP:

WRAP UP: Restate precept #2 – Jesus taught and showed us the kingdom of God.

CONCLUSION (THE BIG PICTURE):

CONCLUSION (THE BIG PICTURE): Conclude by telling the children the Good News: We all make mistakes and do wrong and bad sometimes. When we do wrong and bad it is called sin. LESSON #3: THE KINGDOM OF GOD

PRECEPT #3: The kingdom of God is within us.

BIBLE VERSE: John 14:23 – Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”

BIBLE VERSE INTERPRETATION:

BIBLE VERSE INTERPRETATION: The kingdom of God is not a physical place where we go. The kingdom of God is a spiritual place. Remember we cannot see a spirit but we can feel a spirit (NOTE: Remember to put up your hand and blow on it. State how we cannot see the air hitting our hand but we can feel it; this is how it is in spirit.)

The kingdom of God is in our hearts. When we obey God then this means that God is ruling our hearts. The kingdom of God is when God is the ruler of our hearts. When we have a personal relationship with God by believing in and following Jesus then God the Holy Spirit lives in us. We will love God and obey God. We will show love and grace to others. We will do good/ right and not bad/ wrong. This is the kingdom of God.

ACTIVITY #1:

ACTIVITY #1: Ask the children if they know the group of people on earth that come the closest to having pure and believing hearts? Listen for responses and give positive acknowledgement. Next read the following Bible verses to the class:

  • 1) Mark 10:14 – “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.”
  • 2) Mark 10:15 – “Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

Ask the class again if they know the group people on earth that come the closest to having pure hearts? NOTE: The responses should be children, kids, us or me. Continue on with the following:

Jesus said that the kingdom of God belongs to the pure in heart like the children. Jesus said that whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom of God as a little child will not enter into the kingdom of God. All of you in this class and children all over the world have trusting and believing hearts. It’s very easy for each of you to trust Jesus, believe in Him, accept Him as your Lord and Savior, and love Him. It’s very easy for each of you to listen to what Holy Spirit tells you and to obey Him. It’s very easy for each of you to love and obey God. The kingdom of God belongs to all of you!

NOTE: Have the children energetically repeat each statement after you:

  • 1) “God is the Ruler of me!”
  • 2) “Holy Spirit reigns in me!”
  • 3) “Jesus loves me!”
  • 4) “Jesus is pleased with me!”
  • 5) “The kingdom of God is within me!”

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Jesus is telling us that when we do our best to let (allow) God be the ruler of our hearts and obey Him He will bless us.

NOTE: Have children energetically repeat the Bible verse after you:

  • Matthew 6:33 – Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

WRAP UP:

WRAP UP: Restate precept #3 – The kingdom of God is within us.

LESSON #4: KINGDOM CITIZENS

PRECEPT #4: We have pure hearts when the kingdom of God is with us.

BIBLE VERSE: Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

BIBLE VERSE INTERPRETATION:

BIBLE VERSE INTERPRETATION: When we have pure (clean) hearts it means that sin is not ruling our hearts. When our hearts are free of sin we are better able to hear God and obey Him. We start to love God more and more and our relationship with Him will grow stronger and stronger.

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Remember when we believe in Jesus and accept Him as our Lord and Savior at that very moment Holy Spirit will come to live in our hearts forever.

If we listen and obey Holy Spirit He will start cleaning out our hearts until it becomes pure (clean). Holy Spirit does this by filling our hearts with the fruit of the Spirit, He convicts us when we sin, He gives us good thoughts, and He helps us love and obey God. Holy Spirit will keep working in us and will change us into new creations with pure (clean) hearts. Father God wants all of us to have pure hearts because He has a pure and perfect heart. God wants all of us to have righteous hearts just like Him because we were made in His image and likeness.

When God is the ruler over us good things will happen inside of our hearts and good things will come out of us. The fruit of the Spirit will be in us. We will have a:

  • 1) Spirit of Love,
  • 2) Spirit of Joy,
  • 3) Spirit of Peace,
  • 4) Spirit of Patience,
  • 5) Spirit of Kindness,
  • 6) Spirit of Goodness,
  • 7) Spirit of Faithfulness,
  • 8) Spirit of Gentleness, and
  • 9) Spirit of Self-control.

When people look at us they’ll be able to see the kingdom of God because the fruit of the Spirit will come out of us. They will see it because we will show them by how we act and what we say.

  • 1) We will have faith in God.
  • 2) We will want to love God and we will love God.
  • 3) We will want to obey God and we will obey God.
  • 4) We will love ourselves and others.
  • 5) We will have hope.
  • 6) We will encourage others to have hope.
  • 7) We will have joy.
  • 8) We will have peace.
  • 9) We will have compassion (feel sorry) for others.
  • 10) We will show kindness to ourselves and others.
  • 11) We will have patience with ourselves and others.
  • 12) We will forgive ourselves and others.
  • 13) We will want to intercede (pray) for others.
  • 14) We will be slow to speak and quick to listen.
  • 15) We will be blessed with the gifts of Holy Spirit.

We spread the kingdom of God to others by showing love. Remember God is love. Everywhere Jesus went He always showed love to people. He showed the kingdom of God by the things He did and said. When Jesus did this people would start to believe in Jesus and follow Him. John 13:35 tells us “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.” When we love we show the kingdom of God to others; people will start to believe in Jesus and follow Him too.

ACTIVITY #1 (OBJECT LESSON):

ACTIVITY #1 (OBJECT LESSON): Relay to the class that God wants us to have a pure heart filled with love. He wants us to love Him, love ourselves, and love others (our neighbors).

Take out the smudged mirror or drinking glass and show it to the children. After hearing some of their remarks/ comments on the unclean state of the object explain that when we first come to know Jesus and accept Him as our Lord and Savior our hearts are spotted/ unclean.

Next explain that Holy Spirit will come into our hearts right away and bring the kingdom of God. Holy Spirit will start to help us, teach us, show us, and fight for us. All we have to do is listen and obey Him and the kingdom of God will grow in us! Our hearts will change from spotted/ unclean hearts to pure hearts.

Next pour a small amount of glass cleaner on a piece of paper towel or small wiping cloth and wipe the smudges off the mirror or drinking glass.

As you do this explain to the children that the kingdom of God will continue to grow in each of us and one day when we look at our hearts we will only see a reflection of God (NOTE: if using a drinking class for the object lesson relay to the children that when we look at our hearts it will be as pure as God’s heart). Each of us will be a new creation.

WRAP UP (THE OVERALL MODULE TAKE AWAY):

WRAP UP (THE OVERALL MODULE TAKE AWAY): When you believe in Jesus and accept Him as your Lord and Savior you are born again. The kingdom of God is when God rules your heart. God is the ruler of your heart when you obey Him. Holy Spirit helps you to obey God.
